Entrevista: Hernán Osuna
Luego de girar por España con The Aristocrats, el renombrado baterista alemán dialogó con REC OR Play mientras continúa recorriendo Europa con el trío que comparte con Guthrie Govan y Bryan Beller. La vida de gira, los planes para 2020, el recuerdo de Neil Peart y más. Marco, sobre cuatro ruedas, en una charla sintética pero interesante.
“Estoy en una van e internet funciona lento”, advierte Marco Minnemann a REC OR Play. Marco está viajando, luego de haber tocado con The Aristocrats en España, y se dirige a Italia. Después, él y sus compañeros Guthrie Govan y Bryan Beller harán escala en Austria, Rusia, Irlanda y Japón.
Pese al cansancio del viaje, Minnemann gentilmente dialoga con este medio sobre la presentación You Know What?, el más reciente disco de The Aristocrats. Además, su filosofía de vida, los planes para 2020, el recuerdo de Neil Peart de Rush y más. “Es importante aprender y ser siempre receptivos”, aconseja el alemán.
Durante su carrera, el oriundo de Hannover ha tocado con artistas como Joe Satriani, Steven Wilson, Paul Gilbert, Necrophagist y más. Escuchemos qué tiene para decir este sorprendente baterista en continua evolución.
Estás girando por Europa con The Aristocrats. ¿Cómo viene todo?
Nos está yendo bárbaro en la gira. Creo que es nuestro tour más exitoso hasta ahora. Agotamos localidades en muchas salas de concierto y el nuevo álbum funciona muy bien en vivo. Así, que sí, ¡nos estamos divirtiendo mucho!
El año pasado grabaron su cuarto álbum en los Brotheryn Studios, en Ojai, California (USA). ¿Qué podés contar sobre la experiencia?
Fue fantástico grabar en ese estudio. Encontré ese sitio hace un par de años, cuando me pidieron que haga samples de batería, un solo y librerías de Groove para la compañía Steinberg junto con Simon Phillips. Realmente nos gustó el sonido que estábamos logrando allí, así que lo recomendé a Guthrie Govan y Bryan Beller para nuestro próximo álbum de estudio.
Cuando la banda comenzó a grabar allí, encontramos todo tipo de instrumentos adicionales geniales en el lugar. Así que comenzamos a incorporar en las grabaciones algunas guitarras, un banjo, varios mazos, gongs y pianos. El concepto general de la grabación era poder transmitir nuestra vibración como humanos en el ambiente perfecto. Supongo que Ojai nos ayudó en ese sentido.

En 2019 también lanzaste tu nuevo y doble disco solista My Syster, que tiene importantes invitados especiales incluído Alex Lifeson, el guitarrista de Rush. Supongo que esta participación tiene una carga emocional para vos teniendo en cuenta el reciente fallecimiento de Neil Peart…
Sí, fue muy triste la muerte de Neil. No hay mucho que pueda agregar sobre el tema, él era una persona muy reservada y probablemente no le hubiera gustado saber toda la atención que causó su fallecimiento. Sin embargo, lo que le agradaría son los homenajes a su musicalidad y arte que mantienen vivo su espíritu. Estoy haciendo un tributo como parte de mi solo de batería durante esta gira. Todas las noches.
¿Qué clase de rutina de precalentamiento hacés antes de un show?
Creéme o no, pero no caliento antes de subir al escenario. Tocamos muy seguido (risas). ¡A veces me hace feliz NO tocar!
Has desarrollado una interdependencia y técnica extremas. ¿Qué consejo podés dar en términos de práctica efectiva?
Lo explico más o menos en mi libro Extreme Interdependence, pero como un buen comienzo para liberar tu mente, probá el siguiente ejercicio: La mano izquierda toca las semicorcheas a aproximadamente 80 bpm, con el pie derecho agregá corcheas en el bombo, con el pie izquierdo en el hi hat hacé tresillos de corchea y con la mano derecha, quintillos en el ride.
La vida de gira tiene puntos a favor y en contra. Aprendés de diferentes culturas y visitás países, pero a veces tenés que lidiar con situaciones no muy buenas: no comer bien, dormir mal, etcétera. ¿Cómo llevás la parte “fea” de ser un músico que vive de tour en tour?
Ciertamente estas situaciones pueden suceder. Pero tratamos de evitarlas haciendo nuestro recorrido lo más cómodo posible. No hay viajes que duren más de 4 horas de manejo y, cada cuarto o sexto día, tenemos uno libre. También nos aseguramos de que haya buena comida. Definitivamente, eso es clave para una mejor experiencia de gira y rendimiento después de todo.

Ahora estás de gira con The Aristocrats, también grabaste Atheists And Believers (2019) con The Mute Gods. ¿Qué hay de nuevo para Marco Minnemann en 2020?
El 2020 está completamente reservado para giras con The Aristocrats. Pero también tengo planes de hacer una colaboración junto a Randy McStine. Ese álbum probablemente saldrá a fin de año. También estoy muy feliz de que mi álbum My Syster esté obteniendo una respuesta excelente y que esté tocando parte del material en mis clínicas de batería, que también se continuarán llevando a cabo durante algunos meses del año.
Muchas entrevistas hablan de notas musicales, técnicas, equipamiento, etcétera. Quiero saber más de vos como ser humano. ¿Cuál es tu filosofía de vida y de qué manera la aplicás como músico?
Creo que la música y la creatividad surgen de la experiencia de vida. Sólo podés aplicar sabiamente las habilidades y escribir canciones significativas de lo que ves cuando caminás por la vida. Por lo tanto sugiero ser siempre curiosos, con ganas de aprender y caminar por el mundo con la mente y los ojos abiertos. Es importante aprender y ser siempre receptivos y, a veces, incluso un poco experimental.

En realidad vivo en la zona del Lago Elsinore, a una hora de San Diego. Me encanta recluirme ahí.

Islandia. No vas a tocar ahí muy seguido. Nos divertimos mucho allí.

Marco Minnemann: from the road
After touring Spain with The Aristocrats, the renowned German drummer spoke with REC OR Play while continuing travelling across Europe with the trio he shares with Guthrie Govan and Bryan Beller. The touring life, the plans for 2020, the memory of Neil Peart and more. Marco, in a synthetic but interesting talk.

"I am in a touring van with slow internet," Marco Minnemann warns REC OR Play. Marco is traveling, after having played with The Aristocrats in Spain, and is heading to Italy. Then, he and his teammates Guthrie Govan and Bryan Beller, will stop in Austria, Russia, Ireland and Japan.
Despite the tiredness of the trip, Minnemann kindly talks with this media about You Know What?, his band´s latest album. In addition, his life´s philosophy, plans for 2020, the memory of Rush’s Neil Peart and more. "It is important to learn and always be receptive," advises the German drummer.

You´ve been touring across Europe with The Aristocrats. How is it going so far?
We’re having a great time on the road. It’s I believe our most successful tour so far. A lot of venues are sold out and the new album really works well in the live setting. So, yeah, these are really fun moments.
Last year The Aristocrats recorded its fourth studio album at Brotheryn Studios, Ojai, CA. Please tell us more about that experience. Which was the general concept about the album?
It was fantastic to record in that studio. I found that place some years ago when I was asked to do a drum sample and drum solo and grooves library for Steinberg along with Simon Phillips. We really liked the sound we were getting there and so I recommended it to Guthrie Govan and Bryan Beller for our next studio album.
And then once we as a band started recording there we found all sorts of cool additional instruments in that place which we started incorporating in the recordings, as banjo guitars and various mallets, gongs, pianos. The general concept was just to bring our vibe across in the perfect environment and I guess Ojai served us well.

Also you released your brand new album My sister, which has special guests appearances including Rush´s Alex Lifeson in “Lovers Calling”. I imagine that this participation had a great emotional impact for you today, considering Neil Peart's recent death…
Yes, it was saddening that Neil passed. There’s not much I can add, he was a very private person and probably wouldn’t like all the attention that his passing has caused. What he would like though, is the tributes to his musicianship and art that keeps his spirit alive. I’m doing a tribute as part of my solo during this tour every night.
Which kind of warm up routines do you do before a show?
Believe it or not, but I don’t warm up. We play so often, haha. I’m actually happy to sometimes NOT play.
You have developed extreme interdependence and technique. ¿Which advice can you give us in terms ofeffective practice?
It’s pretty much explained in my book Extreme Interdependence, but, as a good start to free your mind a bit try the following exercise: left hand plays 16th notes at about 80bpm, with your right foot add 8th notes on the kick drum, left foot 8th triplets on the HiHat and right hand adds 5-tuplets on the ride.

Tour life has pros and cons. You learn from different cultures and visit countries, but sometimes you have to deal with situations you don't want: don't eat well, sleep badly, etc. How do you handle the "ugly" part of being a touring musician?
Honestly, yes, these situations can happen. But we try to avoid them by routing our tour as comfortable as possible. No drives are longer than 4 hours and every 4th to 6th day at least is a day off. We also make sure that good food is present. That is definitely all a key for a better touring experience and performance after all.
You are now touring with The Aristocrats, you also recorded Atheists And Believers (2019) with The Mute Gods… What`s new for Marco Minnemann in 2020? Plans for this year?
2020 is completely booked with touring for The Aristocrats. But I also have album plans for a collaboration together with Randy McStine. That album will likely be out by the end of this year. But also I’m very happy that the My Syster album is getting such great response and I’m playing some of the material at my drum clinic tours, which are happening for a few months throughout the year as well.
Lot of interviews talks about notes, techniques, gear, etc. So I wanna know more about you as a human being. ¿What´s your life philosophy and how do you apply it as musician?
I believe that music and creativity comes out of life experience. You can only wisely apply craftsmanship and write meaningful songs from what you see when walking through life. So I suggest to always be curious, wanting to learn and walking through the world with your mind and eyes open. It’s important to learn and always to be receptive and sometimes maybe even a bit experimental.

I live in Lake Elsinore, it’s an hour away from San Diego. I like the reclusiveness there.

Iceland. You don’t get to play there often, and we had a really fun time there.
